What else do employers look for in candidates?

You have the experience and the qualifications. Great, but that’s only half the hiring criteria covered.

I am often asked: “what do employers want?” It’s a tough question as employers differ depending on industry and the position they wish to fill.

But I can tell you that it is not just about experience and qualifications. About 50% of your hireability will be based on your “fit” with the company, the team and it’s values.

Sounds a bit airy fairy doesn’t it?

So I thought, to put that in real terms, why not start with what I look for when I try to find the right person to work in my team.

Many of the major airlines have hired HR companies to specifically outline those “key capabilities”. Yes, it is that important to most employers to find the right fit.

So here it goes, my hiring capabilities:

You must really like what we do

Caring about the type of work we do at Pinstripe is crucial, we are helping people achieve their goals, our interaction is often very personal. You must have researched my company and be able to articulate what it is we do and why we do it.

You should be a thinker

Most day to day stuff can be taught, so above that you will need an open mind. Open-minded people see opportunities and offer ideas, often they see things that I cannot. You like to think things through, take off the blinkers and see how things in business interconnect. Then act on that.

You are a self manager

As a business owner I am not a hand holder. I like to give you the reigns and let you run, no micro managing here. That doesn’t mean you can’t have a bad day, but it does mean you have to either manage it yourself or communicate whatever it is so we/I can help you.

Show a willingness to step up

“I can do that”, is a phrase I love. If you want to give something a go, you can at Pinstripe. The more you want to take on the better, and you will be rewarded, I insist.

Know what motivates you

The biggest motivation we need at Pinstripe is; I like to help people. Whether you are a Coach or IT or Admin or Social Media or Accounts we are here to help each other and our candidates.

A solid level of self knowledge

None of us are perfect but knowing your weaknesses is just an important as your strengths.

The most recent member to join pinstripe is an absolute gem, she pretty much has all of the above. When she started earlier this year she said; ‘Kirst, I can handle all of those areas, but I’m not the face-to-face client person, I love being behind the scenes’. Well, she knows herself well, I thought to myself. And she has over-delivered on everything she has touched.

To Quote Albert Einstein:

“Everybody is a genius. But if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing that it is stupid.”
